Hello Urban Forestry
Enthusiasts,
Here's what's happening in
urban and community forestry:
Have you heard?
Our new campaign,
Invest From the Ground Up has launched
The goal of the campaign
is to help California homeowners and business owners see the true
value of one of the most basic and cost-efficient investments we can
make in our communities:
Caring for our
trees, parks and green spaces.
In collaboration with amazing partners, including CalFire, The Forest
Service, WCISA and California ReLeaf, the campaign will pilot in five
communities across California to show that when we
invest from the ground up we not only help create and nurture
great neighborhoods, we get back much more than we put in.
Interested in getting
involved:
We recognize that urban forestry professionals are
the engine behind all the wonderful progress in urban forestry
and we hope to work with you on the campaign.

Urban
Forest takes to the to the Air: Read about Urban Air
Artist Stephen Glassman and a team of engineers and planners have
developed a plan for transforming L.A.'s billboards into floating,
globally connected urban forests. Urban
Air offers the opportunity to create a more beautiful and
relaxing urban skyline!
Their goal is to: turn Urban Air into a "kit" that
can transform
any standard billboard.

People
are wondering: Are some
types of trees
at more risk
to fall instorms than others?
In the Aftermath of
Hurricane Sandy and last weeks storms
in California, concerns over trees falling is at a all time high.
Citizens and urban forestry professionals alike want to know:
- Why do some trees
fall during storms and others don’t?
- Is there any record
of what species of trees have toppled most and snapped branches
most in wind, snow, and ice storms?
- How many inches of
rain makes the soil wet enough that roots can come undone?
- What role does the
type of soil play in tree stability?

HERE for answer to these questions and more from experts
including David R. Foster, Director, Harvard Forest at Harvard
University; Kevin T. Smith, a plant physiologist with the U.S.
Department of Agriculture Forest Service; and William E. de Vos, a
registered consulting arborist.
