Hello Urban Forestry
Friends,
It was wonderful to see many of you at the Partners in Community
Conference in Sacramento last week. There were many informative and
interesting presentations on success stories and innovations in urban
and community forestry.
Here's this week's urban and
community forestry newsletter:
Partners in Community
Forestry Conference
See
what people are saying....
"In
truth, this was one of the best conferences I've been to in ages. It
had a very good feel about it, good vibes, good atmosphere. Was easy
to meet people there, to make important new connections. I'm really
pleased that I got to be part of it."
-- Tom Ogren, Allergy-Free Gardening
"It
was a great Conference! I think my favorite part was getting to talk
to people from all over the country about their Urban Forests! It was
also a great opportunity for those of us that live in California to
collaborate on issues and to network!! It was wonderful to be able to
visit the "City of Trees" and I left feeling more inspired
than ever!
--Annette Saul, Parks and Landscape Supervisor,
City of Santee
"The
conference was a wonderful opportunity to connect with people from
all over the country, with such varied interests and
extraordinary efforts underway. For CaUFC, it was also an
opportunity to recognize those amazing individuals and organizations
who have given so much to urban forestry in the past year in CA.
Congratulations to the 2012 California Urban Forestry Award
Recipients! And thanks to all of you for your outstanding work on
community and urban forestry".

Cap
and Trade Auction Results Posted
Yesterday the California Air Resources Board (CARB) released the
results of its first auction of greenhouse gas emissions allowances.
The auction was
considered both a technical and financial success.
The auction raised million for the California Public Utilities
Commission to disperse, and million for CARB to allocate towards
programs or activities that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The Brown Administration will develop an investment plan for
cap-and-trade revenue to be submitted to the Legislature next year.
The Legislature must appropriate the funds as part of the state
budget or in separate legislation. CaUFC and its members have been
working with CSG to include urban greening in the conversation and
potential funding opportunities going forward.
Overall
this auction was a good indicator of the strength of the AB 32
program, and helped create positive momentum for the
program as it
moves forward.
ARB’s official auction results can be found here.
A link to a Sacramento Bee article on the auction can be found here.

Urban Agriculture: Practices to Improve Cities
In honor of upcoming
Thanksgiving consumption, in this issue we consider Backyard and
Community gardening in urban environments:
Urban agriculture not only creates green spaces,
but may aid those who don't have secure access to food.
In the U.S. alone, some 49M Americans experience food insecurity
and another 23M live in food deserts
where there is little fresh produce or public space.
As a result, many Americans are taking action:
In 2009,
38% of households or 41M people grew vegetables,
fruits, or
herbs on their property.

This holiday,
let's be grateful for our urban forests and
green spaces and
all that they provide for us!
