October 25, 2012,

Hello Urban Forestry Friends,

Here's what's happening in urban and community forestry:

The City of San Jose is Hiring
Positions available for PT Arborist Technicians

Position(s) will be responsible for the daily inspection of
previously identified properties where trees or tree roots
have damaged the adjacent hardscape.

Allergy-Free Greening is taking Root

We recently took a poll of top reasons people give against trees. Not surprisingly, allergies was on the list. And maybe this is the season for colds  not allergies, but here is an interesting trend that we couldn’t resistant sharing
—Allergy-Free Greening.

Throughout North America, planners are creating “allergy-free parks and schools”. Click here to read more.

Recommendations for Allergy-Free Greening include:

  • Increasing urban plant biodiversity
  • Replacing male plants with females where possible
  • Encouraging proper maintenance of green areas

The Pros and Cons of Vertical Farming

A new solution for  food security threats is being explored:
Vertical farming: based on the simple principle of growing food as close to home as possible to people in urban greenhouses that stretch upward instead of outward.

Call out for Tree & Signage Imagery

Do you have a great photo of trees and business signage co-existing and doing a good job? Or a before and after where the tree was causing a problem and now it works?

We would love to include it in an upcoming blog for the Invest From the Ground Up campaign. We will of course provide proper photo attribution.

Please email it to InvestInTrees@caufc.org
We'd really appreciate it!

Thanks for all you do in support of urban forests!
