1.
Hill Day: educate national leaders in
DC about urban forestry!
April 14, 2011 is Alliance for
Community Trees’ Hill Day in Washington, DC. This is a chance for urban
forestry supporters from around the country to educate Congressional
leaders about solutions to urban environmental health and livability.
With over 100 new members in Congress, there is much work to be done to
educate our leaders on the value of trees in our communities.
We’d love to see as many California urban forest supporters as possible
on the ground, spreading the word on how urban forestry strengthens the
health and environment of our communities.
ACT members are eligible for up to $400 in scholarship funds to attend
Hill Day.
Check out the registration information here: http://actrees.org/site/resources/events/2011_green_infrastructure_summit.php
2. Membership contest – one more week for a chance to win!
Our membership has grown by over 50% in the past few months – thank you
all for referring your contacts and showing the world that California
urban forests have fans! A few of you have really risen to the challenge,
writing articles and motivating flocks of people to sign up.
There’s one more week for a chance to win a $100 gift certificate, which
will be awarded to the top three recruiters of new members.
Beyond the contest, we always appreciate your support to grow our base.
Membership is free, takes just a minute to sign up, and strengthens our
work to raise the funding, visibility and support for urban forestry
throughout California.
Many of you on the email list are not yet “members” of CaUFC. We’d love
to have you and all we need is a few clicks! Sign up here: http://www.caufc.org/Membership#Join
Thank you for your support!
3. California Arbor Week: March 7-14, 2011
One day is never enough to commemorate the amazing benefits that trees
bring us. This year California ReLeaf and CalFire have extended
California Arbor Day into a whole week of celebrations! Check out the
great set of information on the Arbor Week site where can see a listing of events
throughout the state, download press releases and banners for your own
event, and more!
Visit www.arborweek.org,
invest in your communities through planting and caring for your urban
forest, and have fun!
4. Photo Contest – thank you!
We’d like to extend a huge thank you to all who submitted photos to the
photo contest! Check out the entries on our Facebook
page, and keep an eye on the CaUFC home page which
will have a new set of rotating photos soon!
5. Making roots visible: a free educational resource!
The Urban
Forest Ecosystem Institute
(UFEI) offers a huge range of resources on grants, species
selection, pest information, and urban wood users. A few of you mentioned
interest in a recent workshop on roots but were not able to attend, so we
wanted to point out the three-part series on “Making Tree Roots Visible”
available for free on the UFEI presentations
webpage. Enjoy the wealth of free resources available!
6. What do you say? California Urban Forestry Survey
Please contribute to a statewide analysis of urban forestry in California
– your voice strengthens everyone’s efforts! In just a few minutes you
can help identify gaps and overlaps in urban forestry programs and
improve policy and funding opportunities in the future.
There are only a few questions, and the survey ends March 4, 2011!
